Yeah, I've got a lot of pics. I'll post some when I get them organized. (maybe remind me in a day or two also, just in case I forget).

Azz, I floated on of the best Rainbow-Trout fishing rivers in the entire world. It's called the Alagnak River. Was the most unbelieveable fishing in my entire life.

 

My favorite trout fishing has always been in the pristine waters of Yosemite where if you hike farther in than what a day hiker can reach the lakes and streams are just breath taking. The fishing is just as nice as the scenery. I could catch as many as 160+ trout standing in the same spot. Every other cast would net me a fish.

I am glad you had a good time. We will definately be looking forward to these fingerlings you call a "trout"

What type you catching up there? My personal favorite is the german brown since i also like to eat them. Rainbows are over rated in my opinion.

 

Ummm, 95% of the fish we caught were Rainbow's. A small percentage were Dolly Varden, and the other even smaller portion were Grayling.

And do you mean that Rainbow's are over rated to eat??

 

to catch and eat. I don't think they put up as hard a fight size for size as a german brown. Also the taste of the Germans are alot more flavorful. I only eat trout when i go backpacking since it is my main staple for the 1-2 weeks i am out in the wilderness.

 

I wouldn't think that the German brown is much different (if at all) to the brown trout that I caught all the time while back in Montana.

I have caught pretty much every type of trout with the exception of the California Golden Trout and I can tell you with 100% certainty that nothing fights harder than a bright rainbow trout. Pound for pound, they are the hardest fighting fish, right up there with the Coho (Silver) Salmon.

And as far as eating goes, I have never really been able to taste much of a difference between the different species of trout. Nothing tastes better than a pan fried, fresh caugt trout, IMHO. It's almost to die for.

 

When you are out in the wilderness for up to 2 weeks eating just fish and plain rice you candiscern the difference between the two. The only thing i can tell you that might make a difference is Germans usually are up in the higher elevations than the rainbows in Yosemite. But regardless i still think the german brown trout is the better of the two.

 

That's cool man. Any trout is a good thing.

So what's the biggest trout you've caught?

 

Out in the woods i don't carry a scale. But my guess would be 7-8 pounds or so. I have been told of some as big as 12 pounders but have never seen those.

 

Holy shit, I had no idea they get that big in the lower 48.

My biggest rainbow on the trip I just took was about 8 lbs.

 

The rainbows get that size. But the browns are usually smaller.

I am hoping to do another rainbow fishing trip next year on the river drainage to the south. Supposedly it has the largest Rainbow Trout in the entire state. Raibows in the 15+ lb range are pretty common.

 

Can i come along?

I take it you are a fly fisherman also. You can't catch river/stream trout with a spinner or casting rod.
