    Yeah, they're technically a kind of deer (caribou and white-tailed deer are more closely related than red deer and white-tailed deer). It's the same species that's called reindeer in Europe/Asia, though there are different sub-species.

    Weirdly enough there's an island off of South America that has a few thousand caribou (herds were imported by Europeans over a century ago), so the South Georgia flag has a caribou on it!

    We had a few in Maine, but they're highly endangered there so no hunting allowed there. There's a bunch of sub-species; we had migratory woodland caribou (rangifer tarandous caribou) in Maine, which is the most widespread in North America but they're threatened in most of their range (because they're southernmost, near the major population centers).

    There's probably at least a couple major sub-species up around Inuk, maybe 3. Do you know what a peary caribou is? They're the smallest kind in North America, there are some in Nunavut but I dunno if they're near you (mostly more over toward Northwest Territory, on the northern islands).
