    it doesn't matter. ALL software written now are designed to only work off of 1 core. Having quad core just means you can theoretically have 4 large cpu hogging processes (programs) running and that they are distributed evenly among each core. When you have a bad HD and running a program that requires your hd as a dumping ground for storage if the HD has corrupted areas and it cannot dump the info into it the cpu gets bottle-necked and cannot dump the info it has processed into the hd and that causes it to crash.

    Best thing i can recommend is do a virus scan and make sure it isn't antivirus, and if it isn't then my bet is on the hd being corrupted.

    The reason I asked the make Inuk is because a lot of hard drive manufacturers have free diagnostic software to find out what's wrong so you should ask your friend.
