The term doesn't makes sense to me either. Cropping could be associated more easy. I can remember one farmer hollering, You primer need to get the leafs in the trailer straight, godammit!!!! He'd actually walk behind us and pick up individual leafs that might have been dropped. Cussing the whole time.

Merlin, we had a large sewing machine for stringing.....would put a layer of leaves with the stems at the top, then place the stick, then another layer of leaves. This was done on a conveyor belt that fed the sewing machine that used a slip stitch that was easy to remove when the curing was complete and the leaves were baled to ship to market. Loading the bales onto the flat beds is how I hurt my back that still gives some discomfort to this day.

We didn't have any sewing machines. There were to older ladies that would hand tie the stalks to the sticks before we handed them up. Thank God for the Bulk barns!!!!

    I've picked t-shirts off of a shelf. That's my only cotton-picking experience. ;)

I've only talked about stick barns. There's still the bulk barns yet to be talked about. I'll save that for another evening. Man, they were good times.

Really! To me it was just long, hot, exhausting work, but I was grateful to have the job at $0.90 an hour initially back then and worked sun up to sun down. Usually just wore cut off jeans and sneekers.
