I like to do that too, you know. And there's not exactly a nuclear threat going on.

 

It's a short story by Ray Bradbury.

 

That doesn't really fill an essay page......plus the story does clearly seem like a rejection of the social environment on Earth.

 

That was my guess.

 

Just write it. "Because it's fun, motherfuckers!!!!!"

I found him unpoetic and obvious.

 

That's why it's called fiction.

He's one of the most celebrated and admired novelists of science fiction and contemporary literature.

You probably got your hands on something he tore off for one of the popular pulp fiction magazines of the time, not one of his more serious efforts. A guy's got to pay the bills you know.

 

I'm still wondering what it means.

 

The story I'm talking about is "A Million Year Picnic"...yeah it was one of his magazine ones.

Bradbury wrote countless short stories for junk publications that were rather short of his true genius. If you read one of them and compare it to Dandelion Wine or Something Wicked This Way Comes you'll immediately see the difference.

Well there ya have it. Read one of his actual novels and do a report on that instead.

 

RB had some darn good stories...and was pretty prolific during his heyday. I probably leaned more towards the 'hard science' authors myself, but Ray had a way of inserting The Human Condition into his works in an altogether compelling manner...in a different, but no less effective, way as Spider Robinson does/did.

Yep...same reason why we've got Paparazzi, Lawyers, and Politicians on the Take.
