Therefore, please do not use imagebam, or any host, that provides live playing gifs in those specific threads. If you see your gif playing once you post, try to use a smaller thumbnail and if that does not work use a different approved host.

The mood was pretty upbeat in the USA in '46. The war was over and we considered ourselves the victors, our boys were mostly home and reunited with their loved ones, the economy was strong and work was plentiful. The threat of nuclear proliferation and the Cold War that followed WWII were a couple years in the future but our government (and those of western Europe) definitely saw the USSR as a serious threat to national security and continued world peace. That mindset led both to the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan, both instituted in 1947.

Actually I was looking for reasons why a person might want to metaphorically escape from that period of time.......I have to write an essay on a short story where people migrate to Mars to get away from the nuclear war happening on Earth......it was written in the US in 1947....I was hoping to find some reason why the author/audience might have wanted to escape from their current situation to some place better.

Didn't you just state the reason why they wanted to get away? :33:

Yes but only in a vague general sort of way, I was hoping to be more factual.

Isn't the climate they want to escape mainly fictional?

I mean that the story isn't set in the "real" 1946, but a created one.

There was no nuclear war going on in 1946. But if there had been, I'm sure a lot of people would like to have escaped from it.

Now, people were definitely aware of the awesome power of the atomic bomb but I wouldn't say it was on the minds of many people on a day to day basis. I think the book you read was aimed at a much smaller audience.

But I'm not talking about the characters in the story........but the author and the audience.......why would they indulge in such escapist literature.
