Glad you have tonight off....not much rain......by the time the weather front made its way this far south, there was only about a ten minute band of rain....only 0.3 inches here.....but at least no tornadoes.

 

Well, you needed more rain. Glad you didn't have tornadoes though.

 

We may have to wait until this summer to get tropical systems to move over the area in order to fill the area lakes and bring the water tables back to normal.....we really have not had a tropical system in north central Florida since August, September and October of 2004. That is 8 years.

 

That's amazing Thore. But this stuff goes in cycles -- unfortunately.

 

According to my deceased grandfather and father, we had fairly dependable cycles here regarding rainfall, lake levels, and water table elevations.....22 years between high water times with low water times in the middle.....This was the case between roughly 1900 and 1985. We have not had a high water period since 1985.....just varying degrees of low water elevations....I would say the average is about 8 vertical feet below the pre-'85 average.

One good thing about the extended extreme low water situation is that when the lakes do come back, they will be extremely health....The high/low water levels are essential in preventing eutrophication of the lakes. The organic materials build up along the edges (trapped in the water grasses) and this material placed an extreme oxygen demand on the water. When the water levels drop, this area of the lake become dry and exposed to both sunlight and air which break down the organic material, eliminating its biological oxygen demand. When the water levels rise and the lakes reclaim this area by inundating the coastal lands, the grasses regrow to assume their job of filtration and oxygen generation.

So, the hydrological cycles are a necessary natural system.....however, our problem here is that the cycle has been broken for some time....

Hi Thore! My undergrad is in environmental science which really is a jack of all trades science degree. A little biology, chemistry, geology, geography, and math. So that stuff is cool to me too.
