I was coasting into the turn and touching the brakes gently - my foot was not even on the gas pedal. I touched the brakes when I hit the ice, but that did no good. And I had already begun the right turn, so I was unable to straighten the car out.

When i had driving lessons there was on a time some ice in a corner and instructor did pull the hand brake quickly, before he knew it i had the car good on the road. It was the only time he did try that on me.

It's just than when I drive in bad weather, the salt trucks and plows aren't out in full force because it's the middle of the night. They don't clear and salt the roads till just before the traffic hits, during normal daylight hours.

 

It's always good to practice sliding around in the snow and ice in a parking lot at the beginning of each winter, to get used to the feeling of sliding around. That way you don't panic if it happens. ... I did not panic, but since it was sheer ice, there was nothing to do but let the car hit the curb as gently as possible.

Not even ABS or traction control can help you in that case. Ice don't give a shit about technology. Alot of people learn that the hard way. I'm sure you see it all the time in the winter months.

 

That really wasn't a very smart move on the instructor's part. The situation could've turned out entirely different.

 

Absolutely right! Always makes me laugh when people think they can defeat sheer ice on the road.

It's quite easy. Don't give gas and don't brake just steer in the way you want to go. When you go that way just give a bit gas

 

I still recall when ABS was introduced, must've been 16 or 17 at the time, still in Chicago. People driving their new caddies and Lincolns thought they could just drive as if it wasn't snowing at all. Someone mentioned that the only difference between cars with ABS and those without on icy roads was that with ABS you slid into the intersection head-on instead of sideways.

I would've been too. I wouldn't have pulled the hand brake however.
