that is why I do my work in the finished size from the beginning, then I'll know what I'm getting in the end.

 

If you want to work larger one tip that I think is obvious but maybe it isn't is to always multiply up by a whole number, 2x or 4x in practice (3x presents problems of its own). I don't know why you'd want to work at 182% when you can just go a little larger and work at 200

@ 2x or 4x the scaling process works better because of how the software deals with neighbouring pixels .

Like TheOne I nearly always work at the finished size from the outset (99%+ of my sigs are done SS). I think this is probably the best approach nearly all of the time since you can directly see how finer effects and small type are gonna look, without having to worry about whether to sharpen, by how much or what method to use.

 

i chose 1000x because it was easy, no other reason. Never considered pixel matching on scale as an issue. I thought the scaling issues were worked out in photoshop 5x years ago. Still, a lot of the stuff I do has freehand stuff in it, or even the entire piece is freehand like the desert night sig I did a couple years ago. working @550 is a real misery doing that kind of stuff. I do all my text at final size tho, I learned long ago that scaling text outside of vector base is doomed to artifacting or the horrid jaggies.

I'll try the 550 x 2 idea out in a bit on something. 1100x320 wont be too bad on the laptop for more intricate type stuff

 

interesting topic i'd never really thought to discuss before. i can't remember the last time i made a sig at 550, ALL mine are done at 1100x320. in the past i'd then create a visible-stamp so everything shrinks together (a shadow that's offset 10px at 1100x320 will still be offset 10px at 550x160, unless you go through and scale all your effects, but that sounds like more work than i want) but recently i've begun exporting the 1100px version and reducing the size during the save process using Web/Devices. PNG is always first choice unless the file size proves problematic. as a personal rule i try to keep my sigs below 150kb. not really sure why.

as an example of text, all the text in the GoGo one i'm currently using is still vectored, made at 1100px and resized as described above. never had any issues with artefacts/sampling/jaggies

 

a simple mask and merge with a new from visible sepia layer and my logo on top



done @550 in about 15 minutes not counting coffee/smoke/phone time lol.

finished product with text and a color over lay of the generic incandescent gradient from ps6 I still have around set at >addition 33%. An unusual look for a gradient.

 

doing freehand is just about impossible in 550x160, those I try and do in a separate document before moving the whole thing over to the final shot

 

I think I'll do a text only sig next. Igot an idea on a glowing wire frame thing that might work out fairly simply. We'll see.

well, it didnt end up text only, but it's pretty neat anyhow I think
