That's the way I do it. And I always try out oddball merges on duplicate layers as well, You just never know what might happen.

 

agreed, work on the flat image then try pulling individual layers on to the top and using different blending styles. comes up with some nice effects

 

@GBTG: Concerning flatten, in ps there is a hot key : Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E, which I call CASE for short. CASE image is flatten all visible layers into a new layer (IIRC in versions older than cs2 you have to create new layer but later if you press CASE a new merged layer is automatically created above the current active layer.

This is for Windows version, IDK if MAC version use the same shortcut, but the universal way is : create a new layer, choose 'image-apply image' from menu and click ok.

But flatten can make it hard to edit so I seldom use it. When it comes to filter-lighting effects, I'd like to make a black filled layer, apply lighting effects filter, set this layer to "linear light" and adjust transparency. There are other techniques like using curves with b/w gradient. I've put an example:


- Use upper curve to lighten the focal, hide others
- Use lower curve to darken others, hide focal
- Use brightness/contrast to tune light on focal
All that with linear/symmetrical (with some angle) or radial gradient on layer masks. This limits those adjustments on a certain part but keeps some transition.

bit of a gbtg influence in this one not sure about the left hand side, effects don't blend as well as they do elsewhere

 

and now for a real GBTG rip-off! by far my best work so far with layers and texture blending.

Nice one Lukin, I'd just say the border looks better when it goes above the render. Otherwise you can make a real pop-out one (but that'll be over the size limit I see).
