    Olympic hockey is now irrelevant because of the fact. It's now just an NHL all star league, which is contrary to the Olympic spirit.

    Every country uses NHL players though, not just the U.S.. And honestly, if the U.S. is doing good, I couldn't care less where the players are from. ;)

    I would disagree with that statement. There are in fact a large majority of players from other leagues on current Olympic rosters. You may not be familiar with the KHL and the Swedish Elite League, just to name a few. Hockey USA made a big push to allow NHLers to play in the Olympics because the Pros from other countries, not affiliated with the NHL, were allowed to play. If you see this as an NHL All-Star game, you should check out the hockey being played overseas.

    some sports remain amateur, most are not and have not been for a looooong time. seemingly amateur track stars around world have driven big cars for as long as I remember ... ;)

    Yes, I'm aware of all that. With the exception of tennis, no other Olympic sport allows pro athletes to compete. That's what I meant by spirit. It also happens to be a rule, it's supposed to be a contest between amateurs from all sports, one that was overlooked for hockey for a long time (mainly because of Soviet bully tactics employed against the IOC) that both the USA and Canada honored until they got tired of losing to European countries. That's when they changed tactics, and that's when our amateur athletes lost out on a venue where they could shine on the world stage. Don't forget, it was college athletes who beat the USSR pros at Lake Placid.
