  2. Our gif only content threads have a rule where all thumbs must be posted as a static thumbnail that does not play. Currently imagebam made a change where they no longer produce static thumbs. Therefore, please do not use imagebam, or any host, that provides live playing gifs in those specific threads. If you see your gif playing once you post, try to use a smaller thumbnail and if that does not work use a different approved host.

    Phun seems to be an Image Host killer, and I wondered whether there was any prospect of cayne organising or acquiring his/Phun's own! When another one folded recently, Imageshadow, was it?, he seemed to be interested in taking it over, and I wondered whether this had developed into anything, or whether there were any other irons in the fire? Apart from good old Imagevenue, even stalwarts like Imagesocket and Imagebam seem to struggle to stay afloat - it would be nice to get ourselves a secure host, particularly for hot-linked cover pictures!

    There are plans to create a phun-hoster, dedicated mostly to this forum, but of course also open for others. Currently I'm checking how much money it would need to create so it would at least pay for the bandwith.

    I know a lot of huge resellers of traffic, so I would get it pretty cheap, but still even a smaller site will def. generate traffic in the $1-2k range...and you need to earn that money first...if anybody got a good idea...let me know.

    The only thing we already got, is the name! :)

    I hate dealing with imagehosts...it's why I don't post a lot of (well, any really) pics....well....that and I'm a lazy prick. :D

    Any move on this front? I'm struggling to get even Imagevenue to work for thumbnail sets now - I'm having to upload several times, and even then can't guarantee that all uploaded pics are accessible! I've always sworn by them in the past, but if I can't depend on Imagevenue, where next?

    Looks like they had some server problems today.

    This problem keeps recurring, and I wonder whether we should review the way we operate - we need Imagehosts and we should adopt an approach that balances our Phun with their survival!

    A year ago when I joined Phun, hotlinking was virtually non-existent on the Model forum, possibly because the rules require thumbnails to be used! Nowadays, regardless of these rules, just about every thread has several hotlinked images amongst the thumbs. I'm as guilty as everyone else in this respect, and I agree that posts look mighty pretty like that, but we have to take account of the impact we're having elsewhere!

    Perhaps we should revert to thumbnails only again? Or would it be possible to restrict hotlinking to members with more than 1500 posts, or 3000 posts, or whatever? (If it would help!)

    I genuinely think we should address the issue somehow!

    hotlinking is pain in the ass for hosts. its just like your neighbour would use your gas for free. if that makes any sense..
