fishing with a traditional Inuit fish spear, called a Kakivak that he made himself. fishing for arctic char at Bloody Falls where my Ancestors were attacked.

he made the Kakivak and was going after arctic char with it. he was able to spear an arctic char with the Kakivak.

I made a trip with one of my drivers last Tuesday to Thursday.
We went a bit up North in Sweden.
What a trip that was .....

Driving with a 3,38 Meter (9.84 feet) wide load.

2600 Km (about 1615 miles) in 48 hours.

Nature made it a bit difficult as we got about 50 cm (19 inches) new snow in some parts and that makes driving not that easy.
Even 12 Km (7.5 miles) from home there was trouble as seen in the last pic. Ice on the road !

I´m just glad we got through it without damage on the truck or ourselves.

Cool pics Magge, and is true, when I lived in Patagonia I remember every winter the cars with chains in their tires becouse other way was impossible circulate becouse the snow...ice is even worst.

 

Our local river (Welland River) is just startin' to freeze up - so I went out and grabbed a few shots of Canada geese on the thin ice a few days ago.

I got a new camera for Christmas It's Canon EOS Rebel. These are a few snap shots I took, obviously not of the greatest quality yet. I resized the pics down to 25% and only auto-brightened them. The quality seems like it was reduced as much as the images. I gotta a lot of learning to do. Maybe some of you guys can help me along.

 

1. Get yourself an 18-200mm lens - best investment you can make.

2. Composition, composition, composition.

3. If you've got Photoshop - the unsharpen tool is your best friend. Any photo that needs more than +20 of unsharpening (sharpening) is a throwaway (unless you're going for that blurry art look).

4. Experiment, experiment, experiment. Get to know your camera thoroughly - learn the manual settings instead of relying solely on auto.

5. Take 'safety shots' - don't rely on only one or two shots to turn out good. Try bracketing exposures at first until you get to know the camera better.

6. Take the shots in the largest size (and lowest JPG compression) the Rebel will do - to give you lots of cropping latitude later when post-editing.

7. Look into buying a copy of Imagenomic Portraiture plug-in filter for Pshop. The single most useful plug-in out there IMO (and I've been doin' this for 20 years <grinz>).

8. Think outside the box and try taking a photo from somewhere most people wouldn't stand to take theirs. Go the extra mile to get a unique perspective on a scene.

9. Awesome photos straight from the camera are few and far between. Often they're created in Pshop with enhancements to color saturation, light level adjustments, cloning out unwanted elements, sharpening and overall tweaking. I've seen many seemingly mundane shots turn into something wonderful with the right tweaking.

10. Brave the elements and shoot in all kinds of weather. If you have the time and resources, research local places and travel to get unique photos. Choose a subject you have a passion for.

Just a few tips off the top of my head.

 

Thanks a load SK!! I plan on getting an extra lens for sure. With it being Christmas I just don't have the $ yet. Also, I don't have Pshop - which will be a learning experience itself just like all the different settings on the camera. Photography is something that i've always been interested in but never took the initative to purchase what you need to do it right. Now that i've got a good start I plan on changing that. There's many different times i've wished I had a camera and knew how to capture what my eyes saw. Hopefully in time i'll be able to do just that. As far as what I have a passion for, that should be obvious. Skylines (as in sunsets and sunrises) and animals in their natural habitat (birds, butterfly's, etc..) are the 2 that I love the most. There's also several golf courses than in the future I plan on taking shots of. Hopefully i'll be able to contribute to this thread with some good quality pics soon.

Until you get Pshop - check out PhotoScape - completely free, open-source photo editor (one of the best freebies I've seen available) - http://www.photoscape.org (free download). It's very quick and efficient with a LOT of features.
