Suzy Hamilton was a top US Middle distance runner. Thought to be an "all-American girl" until it was discovered that she gave up her track shoes to become a call girl! Quite a scandal!

 

he ended up winning the 800 meters in the 1972 Olympics in a big upset.

 

I paid attention to it also as I was a middle and distance runner from about 64-68 and with the U of F here, trained with a few Olympic runners.

What was your best event, Thore?

 

I trained with a few Olympic runners myself. An older kid from my school went to Oregon and knew Prefontaine. Through him I got to meet guys like Bill Rodgers who came and ran in a local 20k that was a pretty big race.

The half mile, as it was called back then. Best time was 1:57.5 Qualified for the State meet a few times. Ran around 4:20 in the mile and about 51.0 for the quarter mile as anchor on our mile relay team.

Wow. Hard to visualize given that the only pics of you I've ever seen are fairly contemporary.

 

I had to quit half way thru my senior year track season because of a foot injury.....was told I probably would never be able to competitively train again....so endth my running career. I was actually a bit happy about it. Six month later, I was accepted on the U of F men's gymnastic team.

 

I'm still damn tired. I'm going to make my 4th visit to the reading room and then take a nap. Hava great night you guys. Happy New Year!

 

I was 5'8.5" weighing 135 pounds......and could still knock out 40 pull ups.

 

those times are damn good.

I did cross country in the fall and ran the half mile, mile and two mile in most meets. My PRs were 2:03, 4:28 and 9:57 respectively.
