Actually, even with me living so far away from the populace, they have a more than healthy foothold on the area. There are strict limits, weight and sex, to the hunting program here. I want one for the sport, meat, and to help keep their numbers in check.

 

Magge, about eight or nine years ago I was in one of the local hunting clubs. We saw that the doe to buck ratio was getting way out of hand, almost ten to one. For two years we had a bylaw in effect that stated that no buck smaller than ten points would be harvested. If it was a $200 fine was implemented, first offence. Second offence was dismissal. We're all about the balance. It's not just about shooting and killing because we can.

 

I wouldn't expect you to understand the sport. Not many folks do.

I'll try to explain. This is hunting them in their natural habitat. No, not like goin' on a guided hunt to some ranch. There you would shoot them at a predetermined time that happens to coincide with their feeding schedule. That's not hunting. This is watching them all year, or for years, picking out one or two. You pick your "ambush" points from patterns you have learned over the time you have been scouting. So many factors goes into it, weather, available food crops, pressure, etc.. Not a walk in the park. The eight pointer a harvested last year, I had seen him for 3 years,

Bears are actually omninvorous, eat both plants and meat.(I misspelled that big time!)
Here you would see them foraging on bean and corn fields but, they will hone in on a fresh kill from a lesser predator. We also have bobcats and coyotes here. They will take down smaller prey including yearling deer. If there is no "balance" all the species will suffer.
