    Here, in the Tobacco Belt, we grow Golden Leaf. TBone, where you are at and in the early winter locales they would grow Burley.

    So different is the way it is harvested. To me, burley looked thicker yet wilted compared to the Golden Leaf here.

    the stuff from here is used for cigar wrappers - they call it shade tobacco because they limit sun exposure.

    Sorry, was not referring to high tobacco, only that when you are cropping tobacco, it is much easier when you are working with the leaves higher from the ground.

    And Merlin, we called it cropping here.....never heard of priming :dunno:

    Did a lot of tobacco cropping, stringing, hanging, and baling between the ages of 14 and 18. I was little and wirery back then and would always be the one at the top of the barn, some thirty feet off the floor. Nobody wanted to do that job, but I liked it as there was less juice dripping into your eyes.....and that stuff burned. ;)

    That looks like an old timey stick barn. The tobacco is tied, by hand on sticks, and hung to dry. The sticks are a really hard wood, prolly hickory. Any way, Many times I had to be the one at the very top setting the sticks on the rails to dry. One update to those type of barns was the introduction of gas heat to speed the drying process.
