I doubt any of their careers will suffer due to the hack. What is it with women taking nude pics of themselves anyway? Self esteem?

 

IDK I'm pretty sure there are a few people with shit tons of pics, maybe they lay low for a while maybe they wont post them for fear of getting caught maybe they'll continue leaking but at a much slower pace who knows but there's definitely still a good possibility for more.

 

What boggles my mind is that all these celebrities have armies of people who look after every aspect of their career, and you'd think one would go "Hi can l look at your privacy and sync settings real quick?"

I'm aware that iCloud rips happen, but they happen by phishing, social engineering, or (maybe in recent cases) brute forcing individual accounts. I was just trying to clear up the misconception people seem to have that iCloud as a whole was hacked. It wasn't rooted, individual accounts were compromised.

No, that's a misleading headline and has little to do with this. That's discussing security flaws with how iCloud backups take place, most notably that 2FA can be bypassed for backups and the user isn't notified that a backup even took place. That's bad, but you still need the username and password to pull that off.

What likely happened–especially as more info has come out about the timelines and trading on Anon-IB–is that these pics came from various cloud services (Dropbox, for instance) over a period of time with iCloud being the big one because of iPhones.

They probably used the standard low-tech methods mentioned above, but recent hacks may have used a recently discovered and since patched vulnerability that allowed brute forcing. Basically, if you have somebody's email they use for iCloud you could use the Find My Phone API to brute force without being rate limited. This would make brute forcing much easier as long as you knew the email and the password was simple enough.

But, that is a recent discovery so it's unclear if it was even used for many/any of these hacks.

 

Eh, I agree with you to an extent minus the Apple FUD. None of these companies want to give into those forces, but they all did/do, not just Apple.

For the ordinary person, much of the security is up to you to fuck up. With any given service, if you use a strong password, 2FA, and aren't dumb about getting phished, you should be reasonably safe. If you want to be really secure you have to use a service where only you hold the encryption keys. Apple, Google, Dropbox, etc are out leaving very few options (ex. Spideroak). And it may come to down to sacrificing some theoretical security for a better experience or 3rd-party integration (Dropbox is pretty awesome otherwise).

 

There are a lot of them who rely on image control like Jennifer Lawrence. They are not who they are to us, and are how they control how we percieve them. That was taken away.

And there are a lot of them who'll get made "famous" the Kim Kardashian way; I can guarantee you that more people know who Victoria Justice is now after one day than they did in her past few years of actually trying to be famous

 

I'm no lawyer, but the terms for these services, including iCloud, have indemnity clauses that cover unauthorized access. Might be tough to sue.

Revenge Porn laws are already being enacted in many states. Coincidentally, California just passed/revised one days before this.

if they were fakes, they wouldn't be pursuing legal action, they'd just say they are fake and move on...

part of me wishes they were fake because part of me feels terrible for some of these women... but actions speak louder than words and legal recourse is a sign they are very real

 

It's kind of bitter, knowing the amount of content that's out there and the names that are included.
