Therefore, please do not use imagebam, or any host, that provides live playing gifs in those specific threads. If you see your gif playing once you post, try to use a smaller thumbnail and if that does not work use a different approved host.

    This comes up regularly, but I don't think there can be a precise definition, since perceived "quality" in a photographic image sense (ignoring any consideration of the subject matter or content) is a combination of resolution/definition/sharpness and size, and is somewhat subjective. If an image is enlarged, it's resolution/definition/sharpness is not improved (in fact the information per square inch actually declines), and the image is merely bigger, not better! However, a larger higher-definition image is to be preferred over a smaller lower-definition one, and use of the LQ-MQ-HQ-UHQ descriptors are simply a rough guide to browsers as to what they might expect to find in a thread.
    Users soon get the feel for the sort of standards to apply.

    It's possible that a scientifically rigorous definition of standards of "quality" could be derived (maybe already has been, somewhere) but I suspect that it might be totally incomprehensible to most of us! :)
