    The tradition dates back to 1952 (April 15). It's still one of, if not the dumbest traditions in sports. It's serves no meaningful purpose. Also tradition is a dumb excuse. By the way, I'm not directing my statements at you pm. I'm just saying how I feel about the tradition in general.

    It's disgusting. It's also a waste of food. I wouldn't have a problem if they threw fake octopi on the ice, though.

    That wouldn't make sense. Why would you throw your own mascot? It would have to be something representing the opponents mascot.

    There's actually something really cool in minor league hockey called a teddy bear toss. During intermission (or after the first goal) fans throw thousands of teddy bears onto to ice. The bears then get collected and sent to hospitals and charities.

    They actually aren't allowed to be brought in (Although that rule is not heavily enforced), so most people sneak them in.
