Fire ants are very invasive and territorial! You see a nest, treat it, and the little bastards just move over a few feet. I've been chasing their mounds ever since the last frost.

I use Andro which is a bate that the worker ants feed to the queen....it does not work fast, but it does kill the queen and the mound eventually dies out....in about 3 to 4 weeks. It is the only thing I have found that does not just make them move....:dunno:

Granular baits are the way to go if you can have the weather cooperate. Liquids just kill soldiers and never get down to the queen, which may be up to 12 feet deep.

To me, they are just a bit of a nuisance as their sting is not that painful, but they do fester and you need to take care that they do not get infected. The little black tree ants cause me much more discomfort....they usually fall out of trees and land around my neck, bite or sting, that leads to a large welt that itches like a som bitch for a week or two. :?

 12 feet deep would put you below the local water table for over half of Florida....

Does that count the height of the mound?

A big mound around here is only 6 to 8 inches high...but it could be 2 to 3 feet across.

12 feet is the max. As Thore mentioned, it will vary with the water table. Here, the more rain we get, the worse they are. The water table is higher so their mounds are more prevalent. I've seen mounds almost two feet high during a wet summer.

The real problem is for those animals or people that are allergic to them.....they have a tendency not to sting when they first get on you, but rather wait until there are dozens on you before the command to sting is issued.....often a person does not even know they are on them until 30 of them almost simultaneously sting them. I have seen pics of people that are allergic and they look like they have dozens of full size boils on them. I worry more about my dogs than myself.

Also, they tend to bite with their mandibles, to latch on, then sting on command.

Well, as I suspected, the pop-up thunderstorms that were in the area have dissipated....so I can put out the pellets.

As do other insects like bees, wasps, and scorpions.....and spiders; again, these people are allergic.

We should be clear of any rain till Friday so I'll put out another dose in the AM, before work. The granules usually require watering in but I let the heavy dew do it for me. :p I know, I'm soooo lazy.

Over the years, as a pest Tech, I've been bitten hundreds of times. Now, I get an allergic type reaction. Not enough to go to the hospital, but enough to be mindful of the mounds.
