    You should read Tony Hillerman. Crime fiction set on the Navaho Indian Reservation in the American southwest. The drama is well structured and what you learn about the Navahoes is fascinating.

    Well not everything that's written is really literature in academic sense of the term.....and there aren't really any definitive qualities to really determine it by.....but there is something called the western literally cannon which is a cannon of off all groundbreaking works throughout the ages.......again there isn't a definitive list it varies.....from person to person......I suppose one could say that "literature" is art represented in words......in fact I like that definition.
