I don't for a large part.....but society in general does.....my God look at how far we have gone in rationalizing and aggrandizing our existence and making ourselves out to be a chosen people (various religious sects apply) conjuring up souls and Heavens to pathetically delude ourselves from the reality of our own meaningless fate and....our entire society is based on convincing ourselves that we belong here........it's like masturbating.....you just keep on doing it because it gives you pleasure......but it's biologically redundant.

 

Okay that probably didn't properly answer your questions.

 

Why expect more from humanity....because we are the pinnacle of evolution we can move beyond the baser instinct.....question our own existence......define it even......yet all we do is create a slightly more sophisticated beehive.

 

It answered a question I thought about asking, but didn't because I figured it didn't really pertain to your post, I was going to ask if you believe in a God, because the answer to that would likely change your opinion on your first post greatly. Part of the aggrandizement has to come from the fact that we are so obviously, vastly superior mentally to any other being on the earth, so naturally the first question would be why is that?

 

So why don't we expect more from a dolphin as opposed to a fruit fly?

I am Agnostic, I've always found it narcissistic to claim to know either way, be it the vehemently religious or atheist.

Also, there is nothing you could say that would offend me.

 

Dolphins have a much much higher mental and emotional capabilities than fruit flies.

 

Also, Evolution is a relatively new theory, but the question would have been around for thousands of years.

Yes, but we don't expect anything more from them, they still only live to reproduce, same as the fruit fly.

 

Most atheists I talk to are just as fanatical as the extremely religious, and are just as stubborn with their beliefs.

 

Preciously......we weren't talking about religion but the endless and futile social structure's bent on placating our existence.

 

Exactly......and the sufficient increase in Atheist groups...who meet up once a week and talk....have community events....etc.......it's just a congregation without the God.

Yes, that just seems to be the reason why we've always tried to justify our existence, If a few other species were as, or nearly as smart, the question would likely not have been asked.

 

That's not true.....it's like asking why things are better on 50'' tv than on a 20'' tv......only the 20'' tv doesn't really have enough brain power to wonder why......the 50'' inch one does......only there is no real answer......and so it creates one.


And yes....even i other species were as smart the question still woud be asked.....although there would be less glorification of our own race.

 

Of course not, I'm asking, how do you measure what humans should be capable of, Since we are all there is, whatever we do is what were capable of. There is nothing to compare too. Maybe this is the pinnacle of human existence, or maybe in a dozen years well discover something that changes everything technologically, or world war will knock us back a few thousand years and well have to start over, It's happened before and will happen again. Its not a steady increase of human advancement, It ebbs and flows throughout history and will continue to do so.

 

That was my original point......of how we have used our talents.....simply to create a mindless social system that goes nowhere on a cosmological spectrum.

 

Even if we had the ability to completely obliterate earth it would be meaningless to the rest of the universe, saying the things we've done aren't meaningful on that level is ridiculous. There is nothing human beings could ever do that would be meaningful on a cosmological level. And without a belief in God, why ask for more than what should be expected based on the history of a species?
