It is the ground effects of these type of race vehicles.......they actually create a strong vacuum under the cars when at speed. Several years ago, they had a road course race in St. Petersberg Florida.......the cars were sucking the 240 pound iron man-hole covers up......this was noted during practice, so it did not impact the race.....the solution was to spot wield the metal covers to the metal rims......Since that time, the amount of allowed ground effects have been reduced....

OK....so you get mad and all worked up.....did it make things any better? I doubt it....probably only worse as now you are pissed off.

 

I guarantee there are plenty of pissed off auto executives in Detroit right now. And fans, too. The shit's gonna fly.

 

I know about the ground effect.. I was talking about poorly made tarmac. over here I see that almost everywhere where they laid new tarmac last year.. it's all broken now and needs to be mended again this summer... that never happened before

 

It will probably take that to shake loose several million $ to cover the mill/resurfacing cost.

 

By tarmac are you speaking of what we call asphaltic concrete (black pavement)? If so, it takes the right mix, correct application method, and adequate thickness for it to perform properly. any of those three elements not done sufficiently will lead to a greatly shortened functional life of the pavement. Pavement design was one area of my engineering practice.

This was the 4th race in 3 days on this track this weekend. The track was beat up before the race started!

 

I have notice over the years here in the USA many highways with premature pavement deterioration.....Generally, the pavement design is adequate so I strongly suspect the construction inspection is deficient....over here, the work is done by contract awarded by low bid. This is a poor method of doing business as basically it pits the contractor against the owner....the contractor tries to cut every corner he can to make or increase his profit and the owner must expend funds to insure he gets the product he has specified. Negotiating a contract price would better insure a sufficient and successful constructive effort.
