One thing I hate about being ill is even my dreams conspire against me at times. This is one I had (to the best of my recollection)...

I was out on a long stretch of desert highway driving a Maserati Quattroporte explaining to my passengers (there may have been two, or possibly just one. They were fairly amorphous so it's hard to say) the difference between the car's sport and economy modes. That particular stretch of highway is very real, it runs north/south in eastern Nevada, north of Vegas and I'd been up and down it several times. As the Maser breached a rise the road fell away in a long, sloping straightaway so I just jump on the gas and let her rip. I can still visualize the landscape blurring past as the car gained greater and greater velocity, was really a wild ride - until I saw the telltale flicker of red and blue flashing lights in the rearview mirror. Damn. I eased off the accelerator until finally rolling to a stop, allowing the state trooper to catch up and finally pull in behind. One of my ghostly passengers said, "now what?"

"Don't worry, I got this," I replied, as I toggled the driver's side window down.

The trooper stepped into view about then and asked, "Sir, do you have any idea how fast you were going?"

I said, "Sure. I hit 210 before I noticed you back there." At that point I handed the trooper some sort of credential (I have no idea what it was), which he studied briefly, then handed back to me.

"Have a nice day," he said. "Drive safe."

Which I did. Somehow, I was suddenly driving slowly along rural backroads trying to find my way back to the highway I was just on. This seemed to go on for sometime until I finally came upon a mostly desolate old town. It was all gray and dusty, paint peeling off clapboard buildings that looked 100 years old. Rickety porches. Boarded up windows on many. But there were still a couple of establishments in operation, or appeared to be anyway. I was going to stop and direction when I saw a crossroad up ahead that appear to be well traveled. When I got to it I immediately noticed the railroad tracks down aways on the left and felt sudden relief. Railroads excel at going from point A to point B with little fuss, which is why major highways often parallel them....

Well. As soon as I drove up to the tracks and determined to make a left turn on the highway which ran along the other side, the crossing gates came down. But no train was forth coming. In fact, what eventually appeared was a caboose rolling along under it's own power, bumping into what appeared to be a steel block mounted on a railcar truck, which would gain a little distance from the force of the bump and then slow enough to get bumped again. There didn't appear to be anyone in charge of that rolling nonsense either.

After watching that bizarre episode I started trying to find a clear field of view up the tracks to right when along came what looked like a rotary hay bale shredding device thing which was all prongs and knives sticking out of a steel drum, a half shredded hay bale still entwined in it's mechanical parts. I've never seen any kind of machine/device of that sort built into a railcar before. I have no idea how my brain came up with it, or why.

At that point I determined to back up past the line of cars waiting at the crossing and turn right on the other side of the tracks because all of a sudden there appeared to be a city in that direction, a city I knew well with a buurito stand not too far away from where I was in fact. And so there was, just past the railyard that had several other odd amalgamations of inexplicable machines and curious looking railcars. At that point I had some sort of brainfart because I suddenly found myself sitting in a depot of some sort, discussing the cost of housing rentals with a guy I had worked with in a previous dream. Where he came from - and where my car went - I have no idea. But there we were, and when a bus showed up we boarded and paid our fares and continued our conversation on the bus. I soon lost interest because the bus was traveling down a curving boulevard along the periphery of a Jesuit university (lots of Latin words inscribed on the various campus structures led me to that conclusion), though for the life of me I couldn't recall the name of the place and was too embarrassed to ask anyone such an obviously ignorant question.

So there I was on the bus, stewing about the fact that I couldn't remember the name of the damn college when it occured to me I had lost my car! And then - for reasons I still don't understand - I started checking my belt, like maybe it was suddenly miniaturized and could be found in a similar holder as my cell phone. Or maybe it was my keys I was looking for. At any rate I didn't find keys and could not recall where I may have parked - or why? Why was I on that bus? And where was the burrito joint? We should've been near it by that point. But no. That city which I had thought I knew so well was beginning to look more and more alien to me. The rest of the passengers didn't seem to notice anything amiss, but I did. And then the bus came around another bend in the road and out of nowhere appeared the most astonishing sight: enormous, towering, looming, concrete buildings of sweeping geometric design and grandly vaulted entries. One. Two. Three buildings of immense construction - and no windows. "Okay, wait a minute! Where the fuck are we?" I demanded of the bus at large. Promptly, the bus driver call out the name of the nearest cross streets. "No way!" I said. "I've never seen these buildings before! Where did they come from?"

"Oh, them?" the driver replied. "They're for some movie being filmed here soon."

As if. Those structures were too immense for a movie set. "But that's impossible I said!" I declared. At that point a heated discussion erupted among the bus's passengers about the movie that was being filmed while I just stared at them, aghast.

And then the driver called out my stop. And it was my stop. But it wasn't. There was now an ocean where there should've been a river. And none of the area businesses looked familiar. And the burrito place was nowhere to be seen. And then I realized I had overshot my goal by a couple miles and that I would have to head back. And the massive buildings were gone.

And then out of pure frustration and aggravation I woke up and lay in bed for an hour thoroughly annoyed by the recollection of that dream.
