I would build a saferoom if I were to have a house in those parts of the world... may even make the whole house safe while I'm at it

 

or as safe as one could make a house while still having windows

Fortunately tornadoes are very rare in these parts. While living in Illinois, Texas and Louisiana I had enough of that nonsense. Tornadoes are mighty scary.

 

so they have plenty of time to get ramped up.

 

It is a matter of money and what people can afford.....a 2x3x2.5 meter safe room when built with original construction costs between $5k and $10K USD......the increase in cost to safe the entire house increases the cost by about 30% or more. Not only do you have to have reinforced masonry walls fixed to the foundation, but steel roof assembly (secured to the walls) and secure metal window shutters are necessary.

 

The likelyhood of ever getting hit is pretty slim.

 

I'm not

 

People get pretty excited when, say 35 people die over a few days from weather events......I always think about the 200 that died in vehicle crashes during that same time period.....(in USA it is about 100 traffic fatalities per day...roughly)

 

Flying debris is much worse in a tornado than a hurricane and the debris can puncture/weaken a structure that would withstand the wind alone.....
