well, then, it's TW's for me. back in a bit

 

cause they are supposed to be legal to drive for people under 18. it started when farmers couldn't afford to buy a real tractor, so they took what they had, an old car/truck and rebuilt it to be able to use them on the fields, then youngsters found out that they could drive them on the road - legally, and since then the government have tried on countless times to try and ban them, but for once the people protested loudly enough to make them take it back. it's not the speed that's so rough, it's the fact that if the engine is capable to rev 9000rpm, then it's at that rpm that it's gonna be at top speed. (~18mph]

What are they powered by, lawnmower engines?

 

I don't think a lawnmower engine could handle a 7 ton truck, no it's usually the engine that was originally on the car, though many tune them (god knows why, it won't go any faster) and the standard to make them go that slow is to put another gearbox in them and lock that gearbox into first or second gear.

 

I find the idea of a speed limiter a little impractical, but I do understand the thinking behind it. Underage drivers in the rural US are allowed to drive "farm equipment" too, but to my knowledge there is no speed limitation beyond posted speed limits when driving on the road.

you are not alone in thinking that, originally as I said it was used for farming equipment, so the gear ratio was changed to make them stronger, then it's the government that have made laws about everything. but they can't be driven on all the roads, just like tractors, no freeway driving for them.

though, many of the so called tractors have something that disengages of the limiter. the danger in that is that these rebuilt cars doesn't handle the way a normal car does, so there are lots of accidents with them because of the lack of handling, and the unexperienced drivers.
