    The nightly news started to turn PC in the late 80s. Prior to that it could get pretty graphic. The footage and reporting from Viet Nam could be especially so, which contributed mightily to the unpopularity of that war. That's why the government only approves mostly benign footage of the actions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
