    Als Magenbrot bezeichnet man rautenförmige, dünn glasierte, süße Gebäckstücke, die vor allem auf Jahrmärkten und Weihnachtsmärkten verkauft werden.

    Magenbrot enthält magenfreundliche – daher der Name – Gewürze wie Gewürznelken, Zimt, Sternanis und Muskatblüten. Für die dunkelbraune Farbe des Magenbrotes ist Kakao verantwortlich. Zum Süßen wurde ursprünglich Honig, heute jedoch auch Zucker verwendet. Magenbrot ist eine Spezialität aus der Nordschweiz und Süddeutschland, wo es schon früher als „Kräuterbrot“ bekannt war, als es noch nicht mit Schokolade versetzt war.

    In Kochbüchern, die vor 1946 erschienen sind, finden sich Magenbrot-Rezepte, die nichts mit dem auf Jahrmärkten verkauften Magenbrot zu tun haben. Dieses wurde früher auch Alpenkräuter-Brot genannt.
