There's nothing to understand. Rothko was interested in colors and what they trigger inside you. He painted several layers of colors on top of each other to give the paintings depth and make them seem three dimensional. Like you could walk into them.

He was more aiming for the contrast and the effect the different colors have on each other, looking for a balance. Some paintings, like the second one you posted, resemble landscapes. (Sky, horizon, land.)
The paintings are huge, so it usually works better if you see them live. Photographs don't do them justice.

 

i think that would work fine if i knew all the back ground like you do.
but for me i just look at it with this ignorant eye thinking huh?

why doesnt the place give some background with it. i dont know if there was any of htat dude there, there was a lot of stuff that looked like that some of it i had to really stare at, i mean it was just layers on layers on and shapes and even some of the stuff would have been hard to do with a computer.

i think thats part of what made me so amazed at all of it, we think were so advanced right now, but some of the painting of portraits looked like photographs. it was just awe inspiring. and the statue's how on earth did they make marble do that.
