No Jay-Z, Britney Spears, or Christina Aguilera at the VMAs made it just seem a bit weird.

 

The drums were mic'ed to get their natural sound. If you crank the mic's the sound gets distorted and you get feedback. It's about NATURAL drums in that song (live at least). You can bang the shit out of electric drums and get the same sound as if you played them normally, with some technical exceptions.

 

Bringing the classy whereas Miley would/does bring the trashy.
