That's true' Apple users are typically happy with their purchases, I wont argue with that, or that apple makes a quality product. He asked someone to talk him out of buying one. That's what I could think of. I wont say they are happier with their purchase than I am with mine, but then i simply detest manufacturer control (which Apple is famous for). I have had apples I liked and apples that were total crap. I've supported apples, macs, pc's and nix boxes and I'll say apple has had some really good stuff at different points over the years. Along the same lines, apple has caused a lot of industry headaches over the years by trying to push proprietary tech that sucked. Remember the Grape? what a total piece of shit. OS9? Passively cooled imacs that burnt up because apple refused to spend an extra $2 to put in a fan?
Spinning beach ball of death? No office sweet to speak of until their own user community started a boycott to get m$ office? Eh, it's really immaterial since I dont have a bigger problem with apple than I do with M$ or oracle or adobe or any number of others. I was just pointing out a few things that apple generally doesnt want you to remember.

OTOH, dont get me started on the hegemony that is M$. Too many years of winmodem support for me to want anything but a serious case of herpes for ole Billy boy. Really, the only company i've ever encountered that produced a truly grade A fucking sweet system was SGI. I bought an Onyx at a gov surplus auction for $500 in about 2001. It was a 1995 model and it still to this day had features we dont have now. I'm not against folks using whatever they are comfortable with. If you like it, by all means use it. Unless you build it yourself on a serious budget, there isnt much difference between systems anymore hardware wise. Will I buy an Apple? No, hardly a chance with the other options available today, mostly because of price. But if they actually do something truly radically better, like a bendable roll up oled screen on a laptop, or an integrated OS on die I'll certainly look at it and if it is reasonable, buy it. But if they continue to use mediocre hardware, with poor cooling, low grade power supplies at hyper inflated overall cost of ownership I wont even throw them in the running. For all the hype, for about 2/3 of the price of a high end macbook I have a user modified 17" intel xtreme9000 powered, 8800 gtx vid, dual SSD, bluray laptop that is about 3 times as powerful as that macbook. And I still have that 1/3 of cash left for upgrades. Can anyone do it? maybe/maybe not. But I can, and did, and for me that's the bottom line. I'll have the most bang for my buck and do what I want, not giving a shit about what they want to sell me.
