    Sure, sad story.

If this ever happens to you, at any point the driver is capable of turning off the ignition. Then a simple pull of the E-Brake and disaster averted.

Or change gears (worse option as trans would get shot but better than dying).

Sucks for Toyota too, they're fucked. This could lead to an even worse economy, luckily it's not Ford, the only remaining US company with actual profits.

This is really sad but I think the driver could have done something. Most auto transmissions allow you to put the car from Drive to Neutral without the shifter locking. Sure your engine will blow up but it's a lot better then death. The first reply also said e-brake which would have been viable if they had killed the engine/put it in neutral.

I do think this could of been averted if the driver would of been more aware of his options. Really sad though.

Also the 911 operator even asked twice if he could kill the engine but the guy was so scared of his impending doom I don't think it processed.

You're right. It was my fault - I should have labeled it different and yeah I should have posted it in the General forum. It was never my intention to describe the things that happened as funny, but it's a huge news topic and I just wanted to let people know about it...this won't happen again.

Don't get me wrong. I don't tempt fate unless I have too, but I am just saying to his greatness that other gods might get upset with this post

Okay, malfunctions aside...WTF is wrong with the driver?! Take the damn car out of gear, turn the damn engine off, pull/push the damn e-brake!! "Oh no, there's a cliff! We're going 120 (why the hell didn't you stop the engine at 90?!)!" Survival of the fittest...you're obviously not fit enough to survive. =p :2cent:

You're right. I am from San Diego and very familiar with the area where this crash occurred. Plenty of opportunities to ditch the car in a safer place or take other evasive actions. Most puzzling to me, his first words are "We're in a Lexus". WTF? If that was to help the 911 operator identify them, shouldn't he have just said "We're the car going 120 MPH in a 55 MPH zone?"

I have to admit that when I first heard this call, I thought it was a hoax, but unfortunately it was not.

Yea as as San Diego resident, I also freaked out...

I heard "yea we're on the 125 near Mission Gorge" and immediately thought of that report on channel 6...
