    that reminds me of one of my friends....

    about 8 years ago he made a comment to a bunch of guys at work that his mom was going out to hunt for beaver pelts the following weekend (his parents live in upstate NY in the country). We still bring it up every now and then to shut him up. :lmao:

    I took piano lessons from age 7-9. I hated it. :lol:

    Then I switched to drums, but I didn't take lessons. I just picked it right up. I joined the elementary school band and the director said I was the best drummer he'd ever had. I kept playing through jr. high school and practiced my music reading. I didn't get my first drum set till I was 14. (My dad didn't want me to have one, I learned later.) As soon as I got my Slingerlands I practiced all day everyday and made the jazz band. I had one "competitor" who, to this day, is one of my best friends. His family was wealthy and he had drum/percussion lessons all his life. He OWNED a 9-piece set, a fucking marimba, tympani and everything else. But I was practicing my music reading in secret at home. :lol: I'd buy a drum book, sight read it till I had it memorized, then turn it UPSIDE DOWN and read through it again that way. I did this with many drum books. My sight reading got really good (needless to say). Plus, I was playing with the stoner rockers at my school, which the other guys were not doing. So I was jamming Hendrix, Gene Krupa AND Stravinski at the same time! I kept that up and went pro at about 17, although my first paying gig came when I was 14, right after I got my drum set. I made 4 dollars. I played all kinds of music professionally for many years after that.
