See if you can focus on the drum part in this song... It's known as one of the best rock beats ever. Modern Drummer called it "The Beat of Doom." Not because of death, but because it is so powerful, driving and yet simple it's almost dangerous to listen to it.

I'm only 10 seconds in yet I think I recognize that beat. I thinkit's been sampled.

 

Let's see if that pans out to be true. Nobody will know. If he lied once, he'll lie again. Hard to trust that info. I'd like to know the original source, too. Hmmmm.

It's hard to get your drums to sound that "fat and full." It's not hard for a good drummer to play. This is one of the questions has always defined Bonham's greatness: "How come nobody ever played it before?"

 

That version is much better that the Godsmack version.

I love so many drum beats -- I'll expand it and use the word "rhythms," because some are played by hand on congas, etc. and by drummers in India and Africa and Cuba and South America. Then there are so many awesome jazz rhythms and drummers, and, of course, rock drummers. I try not to have a closed mind to rhythm. I don't like the machine-produced hand claps and dinky sounding shit a lot of pop singers use in their songs. The Roots' drummer kicks ass.

 

After a couple hundred hours of practice I learned how to do that when I was 18 or so.
