I use the "Pen" tool in Photoshop. It gives me the cleanest cutouts I have done. But sometimes the edges still need a little cleaning.

Once you have the layers set as you do above it helps to see what needs cleaning and then I will use the eraser tool, with a very small brush size, to clean up the edges of that layer.

I really like this sig. You have done a great job with it. I agree with the idea to move your name to the crossbars above and straighten it out. Good job!

There is always more than one way in PS. For some its just a preference. I use the eraser tool more than anything. On large, highly contrasting images from main subject to background, you can get away with the Magic Wand to delete an images surroundings. The magnetic lasso is another tool to accomplish the same with more precision. Experimentation and patience will get the results you need.

Its easier. You have greater detail to work with, thus making your cuts more precise. The sig I'm using now was done at a much larger scale, then reduced to sig size. Only the border and text was added after reducing.

Pen tool is great for cutting objects and body-shapes.
Copy layer and apply gaussian blur on original to smoothen edges if necessary.

Doesn't really work on hair in general and strands of hair in particular.
Here you'll need to use dodge and burn tools on shadows/midtones/highlights to get a decent result.
It's done in a seperate channel (red/blue/green) whichever gives the best contrast to the background, so it's done in B/W. Afterwards you turn on all channels again and the colour is restored.
It's not so much a difficult technique but time consuming and you'll need to keep focussed when doing it.
Basically you're determining which highlights/shadows you'll allow to come through or block and which midtones you want to partially come through or block.
There are some tuts on how to do it floating around the netz.

The more effort/time you're willing to put into it, the better the result.

Nope, it's easier because there's more pixels and thus more detail and more options to zoom out on what you're doing.

Guess I forgot to post it. ;)

    There's no darkening/lightening involved.
You determine which pixels are dodged and which are burned so the shape is detached from the background, hence there's no cutting afterwards.

Just search for the tuts around 'cause explaning the technique here would take several pages. ;)

Hey... is there a specific reason as to why the overwhelming majority of sigs are rectangle? I can understand that square is a bit boring, but is there logistical reasons as to why there all as they are??
