    Ugh. That sentiment is why we wind up with depraved child-molester priests. Celibacy is only a (not uniformly enforced) church rule, not a religious doctrine. I had a (legitimate Roman Catholic, recognized as such by the Pope) married Catholic priest growing up and he was by far the best priest I ever had. But our narrow-minded parish had him run out of town because they thought there was something wrong with a priest engaging in the sacriment of holy matrimony. :(

    It wasn't until 1100 AD that celibacy was required for most new Latin Rite Catholic priests, and to this day there are plenty of married Eastern Catholic priests (Eastern Catholicism is a branch of true Catholicism, in full communion with Rome and recognized as legitimate by the Pope). There are also a fair number of legitimate married priests in the traditional western Roman Catholic Church (like ours) who were married Protestant priests who later converted with the blessing of the Church (and are fully recognized by the Church/Pope/etc as real Catholic priests).

    Relaxing the ill-conceived "you have to be 'married to God' and nobody else" thought that is prevalent only in some western rite Catholic churches would be one of the best policy changes the Catholic Church could make, IMO.

    EDIT: FWIW googling seems to indicate that about 20% of Catholic priests worldwide are married (mainly in the Eastern Catholic churches), and in America there are about 100 married Roman Catholic priests (counting only those fully recognized by Rome).
