  2. Our gif only content threads have a rule where all thumbs must be posted as a static thumbnail that does not play. Currently imagebam made a change where they no longer produce static thumbs. Therefore, please do not use imagebam, or any host, that provides live playing gifs in those specific threads. If you see your gif playing once you post, try to use a smaller thumbnail and if that does not work use a different approved host.

Another Clarification of Rules (dead links/reposts)

I'm wondering what the rules are on old posts - particularly video posts where the links have gone dead. So far I've just assumed they would be deleted upon notification, but I haven't seen that to be the case (example). Seems pointless to me to keep those threads around, it just means when someone uploads something that has been up before it could be wrongly deleted as a repost.

Report them in the forum issues thread

We generally close the thread when it's been reported......allowing the thread to move down the board. Thread then will not be replied to......end of problem.

I see. You guys wouldnt be open to discussing a revision of that rule then? Like I said it seems pointless if someone searches for a particular (maybe rare) name and half the threads that come up are essentially useless.

[EDIT] by pointless I mean it's kind of a waste of time for the user, maybe the threads aren't titled properly so they dont immediately know they might all be the same.

there may be cases a request to re-up the vid could be considered as approriate (i´d suggest to ask the poster via PM instead of further bumping the thread), but in general - don´t mind the idea to trash dead ones. might def. help to muck out the forum.

Guess it depends.....for myself, I don't keep the vids after I've posted them (in most cases anyway)......so asking ME to re-up the vids after the links are dead ...... not gonna get much from that.

PLUS....if I see n00bs or those that don't "participate" in the forums asking....er.......BEGGING, for me to re-up a vid.......certainly not gonna happen then.

In any case.....either trashing the thread, or just closing it, the best way (really the only way) for us to know, is for you (or members like you) to report such threads to us in the forum issues thread. Reporting dead links in the threads themselves isn't doing any good. We (the mods) do not have the time to go through each thread everyday to see if anything has been reported.

I generally agree with brcook about the re-ups. Don't think you can necessarily trust all the users to show the right considerations with those requests. Also I think it would get too arbitrary if you would have the decision to can a thread depend on an assessment in each case to determine the usefullness of "the rest" of the thread. I guess there could be cases where keeping a thread could be justified by the rest of the exchanges in it, but my feeling is that everybody would be better off just ignoring those and trashing the lot of it.

    :2cent:

[EDIT] BTW BR, I am totally on board with reporting it, I just tend not to notice the padlocks on the threads - my mistake, I will watch more closely from now on. Thanks.

I don't think there's a real need to trash threads with dead links. Most are old threads and shouldn't be bumped anyways. Also there's no way to know how long a link has been down, not fair to the ones who are posting vids if someone else notices a dead link before they do and their thread is trashed before having the chance to reup it.

Deleting threads will help the system run easier and internet will get more clean space :2cent: :p :D

Should the thread be closed pending the poster's decision then or not touched at all? I really don't see the point of keeping it around if there's any other solution. Doesn't look to me like there is a viable alternative though - either you close the threads and leave them like that or you start a practice of messaging the poster once for them to decide whether to can the thread or do a re-up. Call me a pessimist but I personally don't trust many of the newbies (yes, I realize the irony) to respect a closed thread and show the right discretion in such requests. Also I think it would likely result in a lot of posters not responding still leaving us with a mess of uselessness. You would have to incorporate a re-up timeout of sorts... Ugh, this is really making my head spin. :| I am hoping we can all come to an agreement on the best practice to proceed with.

it´s up to everyone to re-up a vid upon a request (there are other reasons for links dying than the "age" of an upload...), but as long as dead threads are reported i´d suggest to trash them, especially considering recent bandwidth-issues. mocking out isn´t the worst idea. trashed threads don´t affect server-load and don´t hamper the search.

and have in mind - most of the "heavy posters" in the vid-mania are just into rs-points. they never care about their threads after they had posted them.

but of course this would only work when those in charge will be informed about "issues" here.
