When I put up my first post, I was thinking cannabis, not tobacco. And while it may be legal in Cali, Washington and some other states, there are huge, conservative areas of the US (and other whole countries) where smoking it in public is still an issue, rightly or wrongly.

If a preacher in the Bible Belt suddenly decides that Ms Lawrence is the spawn of Satan because of these images, and starts talking her down because of that (and because it will get him more attention), that may not be the best thing for her career (If she can't "open" a movie in Alabama, then is she really worth all those millions? they will wonder).

Elsewise, she's free to do what she wants, if it's legal. But high-flying careers have been de-railed in the past for less. Then we wouldn't have her around to stare at so much.

Again, if you're kids start smoking it's not Jennifer Lawrence's fault. Chances are the real culprit is closer to home. When I was a kid, network news anchors and Johnny Carson smoked on TV, but it wasn't them that got me into smoking, it was the parents of one of my friends I thought looked cool. And that was the source of my first cigarettes, pilfered Trues and Pall Malls my friend snuck out of his house. Kids are most often influenced by things around them, stuff that's readily available for them to get their hands on. They're not going to go knocking on JLaw's door to bum a smoke.
It hasn't been established she's smoking weed, and Louisiana only allows medical marijuana. She ain't in L.A.

Oh ffs, just shut up already. No one gives a shit that she Gets sloppy drunk and makes bad decisions with a camera and her naked body, but god forbid she does something completely legal and gets caught by a creeper w/a camera? The asinine commentary in this thread is absofuckinglutely, mind-bogglingly, absurd to the nth degree.

Yea, I was a little high strung. I just get tired of the "shaming" game after awhile.

To be fair, the other person wasn't "relying" on Hollywood celebs to teach their kids. But if you are exposed to media, you pick stuff up. Parents can discuss movies with kids, of course, to give them a better world view, but you can't have those talks all the time. All flooff is saying is her smoking does affect her fans, and in flooff's case, parents of fans who don't want their kids to pick up smoking.

I remember when photos of Brent Spiner smoking on a Star Trek set during breaks came out, there were plenty of "disappointed" fans. He's free to smoke all he wants, of course, but it definitely affected his image.

A reasoned, and rational reply. You make salient points. I really don't think it's as big an influence as it used to be though. Most young people these days are inundated with anti smoking rhetoric in a way most older generations weren't. And the percentage of tobacco smokers has dropped steadily and dramatically in the last few decades.

Thank you! So nice to have pleasant discourse. I agree, smoking isn't as big of an influence anymore because of what you stated.
